Gabriela Salazar - Floral Artist

Gabriela feels as though flowers are not just beautiful to arrange but working with them also teaches you how to be patient, kind, resilient, graceful — offering immeasurable life lessons.  “I simply can’t think of a better way to spend my life.”quote here if there is one Gabriela’s episode “flowers, coffee, scones, repeat …” Taking flowers as her muse, Gabriela Salazar looks to nature as an ever-inspiring source of creativity for her floral design studio La Musa de las Flores. High in the Mexican mountains, in a small town two hours from Mexico City she grows a delicate cut flower garden for her romantic arrangements that echo the relationship between design and nature. Gabriela wasn't always interested in flower arrangements, but after she moved to London to study Architectural Interiors, she fell in love with the colourful array of florals at the New Covent Garden Flower Market. She now lives in Valle de Bravo, after relocating from Mexico City, seeking a tranquil location to grow flowers and be surrounded by nature. Gabriela struggled to find in the local markets the colours and varieties that she had fallen for in England and the blooms she craved inspired her to produce her own garden. Gabriela teaches around the world, inspired both by her English garden and Mexican culture. She loves colours but mixes them with muted tones to keep the arrangements soft and with a calm energy, nature is a huge source of inspiration. We discover all about the Mexican climate in our chat with Gabriela (would you believe it’s actually wetter than England apparently!), as well as crop rotation and her tentative steps towards growing roses. We hear where Gabriela first learnt about designing with flowers and also learn that Gabriela spoils her flowers, according to her gardener. We compare notes on designing with flowers we grow ourselves and how a familiarity with how flowers grow and age leads to a greater understanding of how flowers change with age.
