332 SelfWork: How to Offer Real Help When Hearing Suicidal Feelings: A Conversation with John Sommers-Flanagan

If this post triggers you in any way, here are the International Suicide Prevention Hot Lines. Sometimes meeting someone is meant to be. I felt that way about my best friend. I felt that way about my husband. And I felt that way when I first exchanged emails with Dr. John Sommers-Flannagan. He’s the real thing. A great guy. Easy-going. Smart. Supportive. Humble. And his book, Suicide Assessment and Treatment Planning: A Strength-Based Approach is a must read for mental health clinicians. He's a professor of psychology at the University of Montana and the author of many other books. I don’t say "must read" that often. Even rarely. But it’s a must read. And not just for clinicians. It could be meaningful for anyone who has a loved one who struggles with suicidal feelings or thoughts - and how to approach them compassionately. As I said last week, you might be that one person who someone risks talking to. Last week's episode focused on the necessity and importance and publicly recognizing the fact that many people have suicidal thoughts. Whether they’re diagnosed with a mental illness or not, many people go through times when there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Or they can’t see one in that moment – or that day – or that week. Those people need connection – they need support – they need acceptance. If they're in true crisis, then stronger measures may be needed - and I'd highly recommend calling in professionals at that point. But too many people don't reveal darker thoughts for fear of "what might happen" - even to mental health clinicians. Om Podcasten

I'm Dr. Margaret, a psychologist for 30 years, TEDx speaker, and the author of Perfectly Hidden Depression. I created The SelfWork Podcast in 2016 to explain mental health treatment, and to give you the chance to consider therapy without thinking it's weird or that you can't "fix" your own problems. My team is so honored that five years later, SelfWork has earned nearly 5 million downloads! Each episode features the popular listener question. You’ll also hear “You Get the Gist” segments - a five minute run-down of a current topic - as well as interviews with outstanding guests, authors, or experts, adding to the wide diversity of topics listeners so appreciate. Regularly rated as one of the top mental health/depression podcasts out there, I keep it short and casual - and I'd love to hear from you. Please join me.
