The Message and the Music: Healing Through Hip Hop

In this episode we meet Dr. Ian Levy, an artist and a scholar of hip hop based counseling interventions in schools. Dr. Levy is a New York City native and former high school counselor in the South Bronx. Levy's research examines mental health practices in urban schools, which includes integrating the role of the school counselor and other school staff to ensure the social and emotional lives of young people are adequately addressed.Ultimately his research addresses the multifaceted roles of the school counselor as not only a direct provider of counseling services, but an advocate for systems change and a collaborator. He's published academic articles on topics including: Hip hop emotional exploration in men, hip hop cypher in group work and spoken word therapy with urban youth.
