Episode #300 - Let's Not Expect Perfection!

Happy 300th episode!  Most veterinarians have perfectionist tendencies and our profession encourages it because we need to adhere to high standards.  Perfectionism is sometimes healthy because it can lead to motivation and drive, but taken to extremes will lead to many unhealthy results.   Perfectionism can be a symptom of anxiety, and anxiety can lead to more perfectionism.  This drive towards perfection can lead to procrastination and lack of motivation.  Internal pressures such as the desire to avoid failure, criticism, or judgement will turn toxic if we don't work to change those internal pressures.  Perfectionism may lead to depression and even suicide if we do not learn to understand why we feel the need to be perfect.  Allowing for imperfection, even in small ways, will open up possibilties and make life more fulfilling.
