e270. Why Do Fans Hate Things They Love?

If you ever talk to a big fan of Star Wars you’ll probably quickly find that they hate just about as much about Star Wars as they love. The same can be said of Star Trek fans, comic fans, Disney fans and frankly pretty much any fandom that you can imagine. As much of fandom seems to be about complaining about the stuff you love as it is… loving it! But why? Well, on today’s special crossover with our friends at the Protagonist Podcast, Mav and Joe and Andrew Darowski sit down and try to hash out the love/hate relationship that fans have with fandom and what it says about the idea of fan culture and the purpose and art of criticism. Listen as we work through the concepts and let us know what you think in the comments below (then go listen to the crossover episode on the Protagonist and see if you can spot the subtle differences) Citations and Links: * Thank you to Maximilian’s thoughtForm Music for our theme * Listen to Joe and Andrew Darowski on The Protagonist Podcast and follow Joe on Twitter: @jdarowski * Also listen to Andrew’s other show, Disney Animation Minute Essentials and follow him on Twitter: @disminute * Follow Mav on Twitter: @chrismaverick * Follow us on Twitter: @voxpopcast * Follow us on Facebook: http://facebook.com/voxpopcast * Subscribe to our YouTube channel * Make sure you subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify or wherever podcasts are found and please leave us a review!

Om Podcasten

Vox Populorum is a blog and podcast devoted to pop culture criticism. We believe that the best way to understand culture is to discuss it. But we also believe that it's a lot more fun to have these conversations throwing back a couple beers at the bar rather than in a classroom. Please join our weekly round table of media critics, academics, creators, artists, professors, students and fans for an engaging discussion about movies, novels, comic books, television, video games, music or whatever else we happen to think of! Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.
