How did people in the Torah live so long?

The Torah gives us ages for many Biblical figures. In the first few chapters, people live over 900 years. For the rest of the Torah it's common for people to live well over 100 years. Are those ages really true? Could people really live that long? If they did, what changed? Why do we not live as long today?
