58: James Renner

This week, Bob is joined by investigative journalist, writer, director, and founder of the Porchlight Project, James Renner. Amongst his many creative and investigative works, James also hosts a podcast, “The Philosophy of Crime,” where he answers some of the questions we all have regarding crime using classical philosophy. Bob asks James about his involvement in the Maura Murray case, his work in stand-up comedy, and the philosophy of internet trolls. Later, they dive into the case of Lisa Pruett, a popular 16-year-old girl who was found murdered in a Shaker Heights, OH neighborhood in 1990. This complex case involves many different “characters,” lots of gossip and rumors, and tragedy. On the fateful night of her murder, Lisa was supposed to be sneaking out to see her boyfriend, Dan, leading him to be a primary suspect in the case. In a turn of events, a classmate of Dan and Lisa at Shaker Heights High School would ultimately be indicted for the murder. After a lengthy trial and 10 hours of deliberation by a jury, this classmate was ultimately found not guilty and no other charges have been brought in Lisa’s case. You can check out James Renner’s other works, including sci-fi and thriller novels, investigative nonfiction books, and short stories, at his website, jamesrenner.com.
