In the sixth session of Upaya’s Dogen Seminar, the faculty engage in a rich exploration of Dogen’s use of language, paradox, and poetry as spiritual communication. The faculty respond with perspectives on authenticity, context, and translation, illuminating Dogen’s genius as both philosopher and poet. Norman Fischer emphasizes that Dogen was not paradoxical in ordinary life, but an intelligent, grounded human being who communicated appropriately—whether instructing monks, speaking with donors, or handling everyday matters.
