Ordinary Wisdom: Rohatsu 2024 (4 of 6)

On the fourth full day of Rohatsu, Senseis Kaz and Shinzan explore the interplay of spiritual insight and practical or “common sense” wisdom. Sensei Kaz emphasizes maintaining ethical boundaries in spiritual practice, warning against neglecting common sense in pursuit of spiritual insight. Sensei Shinzan shares how the essence of practice remains consistent whether on the meditation cushion or navigating daily life—a fluid dance between non-dual awareness and practical ethical considerations. The core message is embodied in Shinzan’s invitation for us to find our “appropriate statement” in life—a guiding phrase that reminds us to navigate changing conditions with minimal harm, while expressing compassionate awareness.
