She is an innocent looking romance novel fan—as well as a baby-killer who tortures her favorite writer. As the antagonist of Stephen King’s 1987 novel Misery, Annie Wilkes’ story is unusual in that it doesn’t rely on the supernatural to create horror. One of the reasons King may have decided to examine the possibility of this human evil is the existence of one real-life woman: Genene Jones.
