We talk IoT: How IoT Protects Forests and Combats Climate Change - Episode 34

Wildfires across the globe are worsening. They are growing larger, becoming more intense and frequent, and even creating their own weather – from Australia to North America, from the Arctic to Africa. According to a United Nations report, Climate change and land-use change are projected to make wildfires more frequent and intense, with a global increase of extreme fires of up to 14 percent by 2030, 30 percent by the end of 2050, and 50 percent by the end of the century. For this episode – which will air for Earth Day – we have invited Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Dryad. We will discuss how sensors and artificial intelligence can predict wildfires and protect ecosystems. #sensors #earthday #climatechange #iot #wetalkiot Summary of this week's episode: (01:49) Introduction (02:27) Why our forests need protection (03:40) Why our forests are burning (07:36) How IoT can protect trees (17:18) Collaborating with fire departments (18:46) The main challenges (19:52) More applications and use cases (21:04) Dryad’s vision   Show notes: Carsten Brinkschulte: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brinkschulte/ More about Dryad: https://www.dryad.net/ Information on wildfires from the UN environment program: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/press-release/number-wildfires-rise-50-2100-and-governments-are-not-prepared About Avnet Silica: This podcast is brought to you by Avnet Silica - The Engineers of Evolution. All podcast episodes can be found here: https://www.avnet.com/wps/portal/silica/resources/podcast/ https://www.avnet.com/wps/portal/silica/resources/article/when-iot-means-internet-of-trees/ You can connect with us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/silica-an-avnet-company/.
