Eoin Walker and Gareth Lock - Decision Making Under Stress

This week, we welcome Gareth Lock, otherwise known as 'The Human Diver'. Gareth chats with WEM Trauma Lead Eoin Walker about the importance of non-technical skills - including crew resource management, situational awareness and the importance of stepping outside of your own bias. They consider the nuances of communication and decision making, such as closed questions and non-verbal communication - and the impact that factors including PPE and stress can have on practising good communication.  The pair also consider how we can harness stress to our advantage - deploying the 'train hard, fight easy' concept that ensures mistakes are made and limits of the system are identified before hitting the operational environment.      Works referenced:   R Cook, J Rasmussen, 'Going solid': a model of system dynamics and consequences for patient safety' > https://bit.ly/3amjzM4   G Casali, W Cullen and G Lock, 'The rise of human factors: optimising performance of individuals and teams to improve patients' outcomes' > https://bit.ly/2QPr1Yg   Paradigm, Human Performance Ltd, 'The Debrief Model, how to improve learning after a task' > https://bit.ly/2ybfTOR   G Casali, W Cullen and G Lock, 'Outcomes are a fx(....) > https://bit.ly/2Uob7q7     Get in touch:  Diving - gareth@humaninthesystem.co.uk, https://www.thehumandiver.com, @HumaninSystem on Twitter Non-Diving – gareth.lock@paradigmhp.com, https://www.paradigmhp.com, @ParadigmHP on Twitter
