Au fond is a an adverb that means in essence or at core. Our word of the day comes directly from French and means ‘at bottom,’ or ‘at core.’ Here’s an example: Au fond, Tommy is a good man. But he’s capable of behaving very badly. I don’t care how good a person he is, inside, I’m afraid, I can’t let his bad behavior go.
